When working with statistics, it may be desirable to combine existing characteristics to achieve the desired results. E-STAT lets us extract detailed data for selected geographic areas in Canada using data from the censuses of population, and then tabulate, manipulate, graph or map the results. This specific activity demonstrates one type of manipulation - how to sum selected characteristics to form a new variable. In this case we first select the population for the three age groups under 15 for each gender, and then sum these six characteristics to produce a new variable, the total population under the age of 15. Next, we show how to map this new variable, change the map title, and save the resulting map to a word processing document.
